GazetteOfTheArts.com™ Tip:
Netscape Navigator© vs. Microsoft Internet Explorer©: Tips on Co-existence
The media and the major software companies involved have been hyping the "browser" wars for years now, but did you know that you can have the best of both worlds when it comes to the two most popular browsers? With the right amount of memory (32K or more is best) and a little planning, you can use both, simultaneously! This works best at a resolution of 800x600 or better, but regular VGA can do the trick with judicious use of a couple of features.
In Windows 95 or Windows NT try the following.: Load either Navigator or IE and size the browser window to fill half of your screen vertically while using the full width. Now, load the other browser.
You can use one to look at something you want to see for your whole session and the other for browsing. If you get to a site that has a lot of special effects, try it in both browsers and see which one looks best. Set up the browser of your choice for use with e-mail, or use both, perhaps dividing different types of e-mail between them. Use the browser with the features you like for the function you like. For instance, we like the IE interface combined with Microsoft Outlook© for mail better but we like the way Netscape handles keeping pages that we see through using the "Back" button when we are viewing a site using "Frames." Experiment!
A few tips.
1. You can easily switch between the browsers by clicking the mouse on the title bar of the desired browser or by clicking on the browser's button in the task bar at the bottom of the screen..
2. You can quickly make the current browser window full screen by double clicking on the browser's title bar, double clicking on the title bar again will return the window to its previous size. In Internet Explorer, the F11 function key performs this same function.
Use this "dual browser" approach to get the best view of the sites you visit and take advantage of all the features available in both Netscape Navigator© and Microsoft Internet Explorer©, or use it during a testing period to decide which browser you want to use as your permanent internet interface. In any case, we think you'll find the flexibility and functionality in this approach to be both fun and informative. Enjoy!
