Malasina Home Page This
site is a fascinating compendium of information related to Great Books of the Western
"canon" as well as "significant works by women, minorities, cross-cultural
sources, and gay and lesbian writers." The site is run by the faculty and students of
an interdisciplinary program at Malasina College and contains in depth references and
information on many aspects of literary, cultural, and philosophical life in a form that
only the Internet can offer. To browse this site is to be stimulated and what better can
one say of a site based at an institution of learning?

ARITHMETIC
Math Quotes Hundreds
of quotes on mathematics, from the profound to the profoundly funny. This site gives you
author, author's dates, and citation. A great reference and a great deal of fun, a page on
the site of Rasmus Pagh, or maybe it is the other way 'round. e.g., "errors using
inadequate data are much less than those using no data at all." Charles Babbage
(1792-1871) and Churchill, Sir Winston Spencer (1874-1965) : "I had a feeling once
about Mathematics - that I saw it all. Depth beyond depth was revealed to me - the Byss
and Abyss. I saw - as one might see the transit of Venus or even the Lord Mayor's Show - a
quantity passing through infinity and changing its sign from plus to minus. I saw exactly
why it happened and why the tergiversation was inevitable but it was after dinner and I
let it go." quoted from H. Eves' Return to Mathematical Circles, Boston: Prindle,
Weber and Schmidt, 1988.
Lewis Carroll Mr. Dodgson
we presume: Logic, mathematics, games and riddles on this page, within the Lewis Carroll
Home Page site You're late, you're late, for a very important date with the Lewis Carroll Home Page with many
links to Charles Dodgson and Alice home pages. Some are mathematical, some are literary,
and others are just fun. Commercial sites
page lists links to pages with books, games, CD ROMS, Videos and Laser Discs, Art, and
much more information. Also, you can visit a site dedicated to the preparations and
activities for the Lewis
Carroll Centenary Exhibit with sections covering art, poetry, photography, articles,
collections, and more.

GEOMETRY
Spanky's Fractal Database SPANKY
is a DEC Microvax 3400 and has a datbase which includes many fractal images and which
includes: What's New in Fractals , An index of Fractal material at Spanky, Fractal
documents at other sites. Fractal images at other sites. Fractal programs at other sites.
Interactive Fractal Explorers at other sites. Miscellaneous Fractal material at other
sites. Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics at other sites. and, Near Subject Related material at
other sites. This site leads to much of the fractal world on the web. Another interesting
site is Fractal
Explorer which has a layman-friendly fractal definition and history as well as a
number of images. If you are used to viewing real color images you should download the
files you want to see in all their glory and view them locally on a good graphics program
(not paintbrush!!!) since browsers will sometimes cause color shift and/or degradation
to
these images - they still look awfully neat on a browser. The first line of Neal
Kettsler's definition on the Fractal Explorer site is: A fractal is a mathematical
object that is self-similar and chaotic. Well, that's a condition we're sure everyone
can sympathize with, especially before their first hit of coffee!

ASTRONOMY
Eric's Treasure Trove
of Astronomy Just what you think it is. MANY interesting facts about astronomy,
arranged by intelligent and useful categories. For instance, if you're interested in
Spring you'll be led to equinox, vernal equinox, season, winter, summer, autumn, and much
more. If you are as enchanted by this site as we are you'll want to try Eric's
Treasure Troves of Science
for treasure troves of Chemistry, Math, Music, Physics, etc. This site has the cohesiveness
and charm of a labor of love. The site was created and is maintained by Eric Weisstein who
describes himself as a recent Ph.D. in planetary science, undergraduate in physics and
astronomy, and closet recreational math devotee. After visiting his site, you'll describe
him as "cool." He's also a Hoosier.
Space Telescope Science Institute
(ST ScI) This is, basically, the Hubble Telescope home page. It includes educational
and graphic features. A more detailed description of this site's picture page given below.
Hubble Space Telescope Public
Pictures: Many beautiful images (the better your monitor, the more memory your
machine possesses, and the faster processor you have, the more you'll enjoy this site.)
Beautiful viewing for the patient. A nice feature is direct access pages to GIF, TIFF, and JPEG
images and MPEG movies, with listing of file download sizes. This site also includes
Hubble press releases, additional background text, and links to other space (mostly NASA)
related image rich sites. This site can also be reached from the STSI Public information
site listed above.

Grammar and Style
Guide An online style guide, emphasis on business English. Like all style guides
this one is both informative and a mare's nest of controversy for those who love to debate
these things. For instance, is "mare's nest of controversy" a mixed metaphor or
a non-sequitur.
